The video footage of Animals of 9413 Sophia Ave was recorded across three seasons in Cleveland, OH alongside Malena Grigoli’s deconstruction performance piece 9413 Sophia Ave. The project, multidisciplinary and expansive in nature, deconstructed and biocycled the construction materials of a home over the course of a year, ultimately resulting in a series of workshops, installations, and other documentary material.
While the other aspects of a project maintained a focus on the community, history, and technical aspects of biocycling, Martinez’s contributions to the documentation focused on the hyperlocal histories of the neighborhood, portraiture, and archiving the non-human life around the home. Tucked into a now-wooded valley in the Kinsman neighborhood of Cleveland, the area hosts a wide variety of animals: coyotes, racoons, housecats, wild turkey, and deer. They are presented here in trail-cam footage taken on the former site of the home in states of play, fear, intrigue, banality, and caring.
