The life cycle of Actias luna (GCA_010014465.3) the luna moth, involves multiple evolutions, as these large North American moths move from eggs to larvae to pupae, disassembling themselves completely before they are reborn as enigmatic adult moths. Though blessed with an ultimate beautiful form, they entirely lack mouths and are unable to feed, focusing entirely on reproduction while they survive on a dwindling fat store from their earlier life cycles that lasts them around a week.
Imaginal discs are structures in the larva of moths that develop into the external adult features like wings, legs, antennae, and eyes during metamorphosis. From the soup of dissolved tissue and enzymes that lie within a cocoon, imaginal discs form the complex structures of the adult.
